Apart from the durable, long lasting products that we already owned when we decided to create “Buy it To Last”, Darn Tough Vermont socks were the first item promoted on our website that we decided to purchase and test. The website was still under construction when we first bought three pairs of Darn Tough socks. I purchased them for my husband who has gone through so many pairs of socks since we married over 11 years ago. And so, I thought it was quite fitting to begin our journey with a good pair of socks!
Darn Tough has been making socks since its humble beginning as Cabot Hosiery, a family owned business that started in 1978, in Northfield, Vermont USA. I really like the fact that it all happens under the one roof, from beginning to end, providing the right condition for a continuous process in the manufacturing of the socks, as well as excellent quality control.
So, why are their socks so fantastic? Apart from three generations of know-how in the socks making business, Darn Tough explains that in order to make the best socks it is necessary to knit them on a small needle, fine-gauge knitting machine. This ensures that the stitching produced is ultra-durable and of a high density without being bulky. As a result of the socks being less bulky, they fit better, which in turn helps to bring about a longer lasting sock.
Another very important component in making the best socks is the material used. Darn Tough only uses fine-gauge, high micron (in other words, “strong”) 100% Merino wool to knit their socks. They don’t blend the wool with nylon or polyester, as often seen with many other socks on the market. However, Nylon and Lycra are added to the outside and inside of the sock to reinforce, add comfort, increase durability and contribute to a better fit.
Merino wool is an interesting natural and durable fibre with some very impressive qualities. It is naturally anti-microbial, it repels bacteria and odour, keeps your foot cool in summer and warm in winter, wicks moisture away from your skin, and dries quickly. With qualities like these it’s no real surprise that Darn Tough chooses this natural fibre for their socks. Having said that, Darn Tough knows very well that not everyone likes the feel of wool on their skin and so they offer an alternative fibre called Coolmax. Coolmax is also durable, but it is a man-made fibre. It is ideal for warmer temperatures hence the name. And like merino wool, Coolmax also wicks moisture away from your skin and dries quickly.
Darn Tough has an incessant drive to make the best category-specific socks for the outdoor, casual and lifestyle market. And to express their confidence in the quality of their product, all Darn Tough socks are guaranteed for life unconditionally! If you wear a hole in them, they will replace if free of charge, for life. If they are not comfortable, the most durable, or the best fitting socks you have ever had you can return them for a new pair. I wish more companies would stand by the quality of their products like Darn Tough does. I am happy that they do, when so many others have opted for minimum quality, for maximum profits.
I am also happy to inform you that the socks we are testing are performing very well. They fit well and feel great, especially the Darn Tough World Champion Micro Crew Ultra Light Sock, which my husband likened to the feeling of freshly pressed linen sheets on your skin. There are no holes or major signs of wear, and they do keep his feet at the right temperature be it cool or warm. The hiking socks he has have plenty of padding and are very comfortable which is good for my husband because he has very sensitive feet, whereas his work socks (which are thinner) are great for the office and feel quite light, which is also appreciated. Look out for a full video review of the socks we are testing on our YouTube channel.
We highly recommend that you consider Darn Tough the next time you buy a new pair of socks, they really are a level above the rest.
